Whipple Operation (Pancreaticoduodenectomy)
The Whipple procedure is one of the most complex and intricate surgeries performed to treat diseases of the pancreas, bile ducts, duodenum, and gallbladder. This procedure is most used to manage:
Pancreatic cancer – Tumors in the head of the pancreas.
Chronic pancreatitis – Long-term inflammation requiring surgical removal of damaged tissue.
Ampullary cancer – Cancer at the junction where the bile duct meets the small intestine.
Bile duct or duodenal tumors – Malignant or benign growths obstructing digestion.
The Whipple operation involves the removal of the head of the pancreas, duodenum (first part of the small intestine), part of the stomach, the gallbladder, and bile duct. After the affected tissues are removed, the digestive tract is reconstructed to ensure continued functionality.
