Ventriculoperitoneal (VP) Shunt

Know Your Surgery
A Ventriculoperitoneal (VP) Shunt is a surgically implanted device designed to treat hydrocephalus, a condition characterized by the excessive accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in the brain. This build-up of fluid can lead to increased intracranial pressure, causing symptoms like headaches, nausea, blurred vision, and cognitive impairment. The VP shunt diverts excess CSF from the brain’s ventricles to the peritoneal cavity (abdomen), where it is absorbed naturally by the body. This life-saving procedure helps restore normal brain function, prevent complications, and improve the patient’s quality of life.
